In todays Guardian this story by Naomi Wolf , which is a scary reminder of how close to fascism the US is becoming.
She basically lists 10 preconditions that those trying to turn an open society into a dictatorship will try to move towards:
Invoke terrifying internal and external enemy
Create a gulag
Develop a thug caste
Set up an internal surveillance system
Harass citizens groups
Engage in arbitrary detention and release
Target key individuals
Control the press
Dissent equals treason
Suspend the rule of law
Many of these conditions are, in the writer's opinion already in force in the USA.
I am not sure how far we are down this road in the UK, but I can think of quite a few new laws and proposals that fit this framework eg ID cards, 90 day detention, "control orders". Officials already have nearly 300 excuses to enter your house without knocking.*
Time to fight back!

Pretty alarming - but we're still at the stage where people think it's necessary. :(
It's no different from the US in the 50s though is it? It's not as if the modern US has ever been anything but how you have just described it.
This is scary! :( I’ll have to stop myself from thinking about this too much. Thinking about it will only get me depressed again!
