Occultation

A few days ago Venus was occulted by the Moon.

Here is Venus having just emerged from behind the Moon
And that is Jupiter in the distance, in conjunction with Moon and Venus. Note that the sun comes between Venus and Jupiter, the earth and Venus being nearer to the Sun than Jupiter. The moon is about 250 000 miles from earth, the earth about 92 975 000 miles from the Sun, Venus 67 200 000 miles from the Sun and Jupiter 483 000 000 miles, all in elliptical orbits. As we fall through space, these things appear for an incredibly brief moment

You lucky dog for getting a great view! I managed to see the occultation myself on the way to pick T up from work, but didn't get a chance to stop and have a proper look. Ace pics! You could submit them to Astronomy Now magazine. If printed, they give you a tenner. :)
