As I have probably related before, Mellie and I are off on a self arranged adventure this week, starting with a flight to Paris for 49p (OK with taxes and baggage, that becomes £40 each), after a leisurely start and a train and bus ride to the airport, hopefully avoiding the gaps between train and platform. A couple of nights in Paris and a super dash to Biarritz on board a TGV, which I sekritly upgraded to First Class for an additional £5, as a surprise for Mellie.
A couple of days there, may be a trip up to the Pyrenees at St jean Pied de Port, and a slow amble around the coast to San Sebastian/Donostia, with it's famous beach and dense concentration of Tapas bars. The narrow gauge railway along the coast will take us to Bilbao, the Guggenheim, the port and beaches of Getxo, possibly a trip to Gernika.
Then, lastly, a couple more hours on the train and the ferry back to Plymouth from Santander, with a short trip back home. We arranged this ourselves, so when it all goes wrong we have only ourselves to blame. Back next week, unless they have the intramaweb in Basque Land.
I dont like the short hop flight from Exeter to Paris for it's unnecessary carbon emissions, but I will think about offsetting.

Have fun guys! Waut for train watch out for train gaps. Sweet of you to surprise upgrade. Bless
Have a brilliant time! Look forward to hearing your tales of adventure.
Have a great time! Many years ago I did the opposite trip - took the ferry from Plymouth to Santander and then drove up through France to Caen over two weeks with only the 'Wine Atlas of France' to guide us ...
Sounds a great trip. 1st class on TGV is nice.
