Having sustained a huge sulk while we were out shopping, and for some time after ("turn off the light, I wanna sleep" " but it's only 7 o'clock" and "I wanna drink" "say please" silence. No drink. Two hours of really bad sulk, scared of dark places, spiders, food, you name it), we got into pirates and the sitting room was turned into a pirate world, mostly run my Melissa with M's help, with a treasure chest, various islands, a ship and a plank, while I sorted my CV out/sheltered upstairs. My sister gave me email assistance with my CV: she knows about these things.
I only had to walk the plank once.
Eventually, she tired, and so did Melissa, and the rest of the evening was spent watching A Muppet Christmas Carol.

Finally, we put Melissa to bed and I read her Paddington, during which she changed from the evil sulky drama queen into a very mature 5 year old looking forward to going on the ferry tomorrow and wishing she could do her homework right now.
A child of many, no, two, moods. I think M could turn her into a reasonable human being, given a week or two. I am sure my daughter wasnt so difficult

That's a picture of a very overtired girl. And so is Melissa!
I'm reliably informed that the great thing about grandchildren is that you can hand them back later.
