Old and New

We went up to London to see M's sister and brother (who was down from Fife for the week). A must-see on the way was the new St Pancras station, built in the 1860s and nearly demolished in the 1960s (idiots). The statue of Sir John Betjeman is in there and much admired: he helped to save it.
The fantastic Eurostar trains were there

And this lovely cast sculpture. Check the creases and folds

The clock was reconstructed from the original which was kept in a shed in the north east of England.

Then up to Aylesbury for some sort of festivity (eg little bro home from service with the police photographic service in Scotland.) Notice the jedi warrior with two heads

And here is Hicks the cat, who once was found at Aylesbury station, across a dual carriageway, half a mile away; and who was recently recognised by casual observers at a vet 3 miles away from from his home ("Ooh is that Hicks?").

And the trip from Aylesbury to Princes Risborough on a 50 year old train (and how refeshing that "bubblecar" was: you can look out of an open window as it rattles across Aylesbury Vale at 40mph). I doubt whether there is an older train in mainline service in the UK

Back in the Smoke, the view from Hungerford Bridge (which isn't like it used to be)

M slept on the way back from Waterloo, and then went straight to bed with some sort of bug.

That station actually looks clean.

I think you secretly enjoy travelling in beat up old trains - admit it!

Lovely! I can't wait to see St Pancras - did you see the BBC series about its refurb? Hope M gets better soon.

Well it's just my opinion...but the presence of Eurostar has ruined St Pancras for domestic travellers. A massive hike from the underground to the platforms, and a concourse full of shops selling tacky souvenirs and poncy european food.

Oh, and you can't get a proper drink there either.

Bit of a difference in train technology there!

That cat picture looks like it has to legs, if you concentrate on the shadow under him :0)
